What are graduation requirements for the Virtual Academy?
Students must earn a total of 22.5 credits, as follows:
- English 4.0
- Mathematics 3.0
- Science 3.0
- Social Studies 3.0
- Physical Education 1.5
- Health .5
- Electives 7.5
Will I receive a School District of Janesville diploma?
Yes, you will receive a School District of Janesville Virtual Academy diploma. A graduation ceremony will be held at a location Janesville. We are separate from Parker and Craig High School.
Do I take all my courses on-line?
You can certainly take all your classes online. However, we want to encourage you to consider participation in a variety of learning opportunities.
What are some of those learning opportunities?
The Janesville Virtual Academy has a number of independent study classes available. You can also take one to two classes at Parker or Craig (whichever is your home high school) each semester. As juniors and seniors you will have the opportunity to participate in Post Secondary Options at Blackhawk Technical College or UW-Rock County if you meet the requirements. Service Learning and Work Experience courses will be available. You may also choose to individually design your own courses if you are in good standing.
Where do I get the textbooks needed?
Most on-line classes do not require textbooks. If there is a textbook required it will be provided for you. Novels and films for the independent study classes may be checked out from the Virtual Academy.
How will class rank be determined?
Class rank will be determined by GPA.
Do I have to be at home all the time while my child is working on-line?
This is not a requirement. It is important for you to monitor your student's program. It is unrealistic for most high school students to be totally responsible for their learning which is why we advise each student to have a learning coach. You may want to have your student schedule some of their learning time when you are available to give your interest and support.
How can I check on my child's progress?
You will be issued a login and password so you can go directly to your student's classes and see what assignments they have completed and what his/her grades are at that time.
Will I be able to take classes during the summer?
Full time Virtual Academy students will be able to take courses during the summer as we are open year round if they are on pace with all their classes.
How will my child be evaluated?
Just as in any regular course a variety of assessment strategies will be used (i.e., quizzes, exams, written essays, assignments, projects and semester exams).
How many classes can I take?
Full time students who are first time learners may take only one to two classes at a time. When those are finished you can take one or two more.
Are there specific times I need to be on-line?
No, aren't specific times you need to be online. One of the benefits of on-line learning is the flexibility you have to complete your coursework. You need to keep on pace with course expectations. You don't want to procrastinate and have to play catch up. Pacing charts will help you stay on track.
How do I take science classes that require labs?
The latest technology is used to walk students through virtual labs. In addition, simple household products may be used for simple labs.
Do I have to take statewide assessments?
All sophomores (2nd year students) must take the WKCE/CRT assessment in October/November. We also expect all of our Virtual Academy students to take the MAP assessments in reading, math and language in the fall and spring.
Do credits transfer from one school to another?
Credits from other accredited schools that are recorded are transferred to the Virtual Academy. Courses taken and completed at the Virtual Academy will transfer back to other high schools. Transcripts are always reviewed when students transfer.
Can I participate in athletics at Parker or Craig?
Janesville Virtual Academy is a separate entity, therefore full-time students at the Academy may not participate in WIAA activities.
Can I participate in co-curricular activities at Parker or Craig?
You may participate in co-curricular activities at your home high school if approved by the advisor and you meet eligibility requirements.
As a parent may I take an on-line class?
Provided there is space and you pay tuition, you may take an on-line class.
How often will the mentor/on-line teacher contact my child?
The mentor/on-line teacher will check in with students on a weekly basis and with parents on a monthly basis. You may contact the mentor/on-line teacher anytime you have questions, concerns, or just need to connect with someone.
