2. Janesville Virtual Academy students may request a loan of computer equipment if viable computer equipment is not available in the home and they qualify for free or reduced lunch. The computer would need to be picked up, at which time you would be briefly trained in its setup.
3. If you are experiencing technical problems first contact the mentor/on line teacher. If they determine the problem is with the district equipment, the local mentor will contact the technology department. This person will in turn contact the district support staff.
4. You cannot install hardware or software into or onto district equipment.
Phone Lines – If using a dial-in modem be aware of the following:
1. If you only have one phone line, call waiting will need to be disabled. Please be aware that while the student is working on-line the phone will not be accessible to others in the household. Incoming calls will get a busy signal.
2. If there is a second line in the home, it may be used for the computer access.
Remote Access – The district reserves the right to remotely access the district computers for remote maintenance and/or software installation. Software can be installed on your own equipment that would allow remote installation of any necessary course software.
Damage or Abuse – Any abuse or intentional damage to district equipment or software will result in possible prosecution and termination of opportunities within the Janesville Virtual Academy.
Accidental Damage or Infraction of Use – If something is not working on the district computer report it immediately to the local mentor. If you receive any inappropriate information via e-mail or from the Internet please report to the mentor immediately in order to maintain access to the equipment and Internet.
If using School District of Janesville equipment, the following also applies:
Termination of Access – Progress on coursework is a necessity to continue access to equipment and Internet service. If a student is terminated from a course the School District equipment must be returned immediately or prosecution may result.
E-Mail Names
Student e-mail names must include student names. (It is difficult for teachers to interpret e-mail fun names.) Most Internet e-mail allows people to change e-mail addresses. If necessary, students should change their e-mail so it reads: "firstinitiallastname@internet address" (such as: dsmith@telnet.com). To do this, students simply choose a different e-mail address. If your name is taken, then please use one of these options: (d_smith or dsmith234 or dsmith123456).
Student Use of Electronic Mail
Electronic Mail is an electronic message that is transmitted between two or more computers or electronic terminals, whether or not the message is converted to hard copy format after receipt and whether or not the message is viewed upon transmission or stored for later retrieval. Electronic mail includes all electronic messages that are transmitted through a local, regional, or global computer network.
Students are provided with electronic mail for the purpose of fulfilling the district’s mission or promoting educational excellence in our schools. The use of electronic mail shall be in support of education and research consistent with the educational objectives of the district. Student e-mail is intended for a limited, short-term duration as part of a special class or project. Requests to set-up student e-mail accounts should come from the teacher and be forwarded to the building principal. If the request is for a special instructional purpose, it will then be forwarded to the technology team at the discretion of the building principal.
The School District of Janesville Virtual Academy requires students to use electronic mail (e-mail) in a responsible manner in accordance with established district policy 6724 and 6724.1 Administrative rule applicable to computer use and internet/online use to include prohibitions against:
- Using e-mail to engage in illegal activity
- Using e-mail to access obscene or pornographic materials
- Using e-mail to transmit obscene or pornographic materials
- Using e-mail to send hate mail or to harass other users
- Using e-mail for commercial or for profit purposes including product advertisement
- Using e-mail to violate copyright or other intellectual property rights
- Disrupting e-mail services or its supporting hardware and software, interrupting information, vandalizing data, introducing or using computer viruses, and attempting to gain access to restricted information or networks.
All School District of Janesville electronic mail accounts are owned by the District, and therefore, not private. The District retains the right to review, audit, intercept, access, and disclose all messages created, received, or sent over the electronic mail system.
All illegal and improper use of the electronic mail system, including but not limited to pornography, obscenity, harassment, threats, solicitation, gambling, and violating copyright or intellectual property rights are prohibited.
Policy or rule violations will result in appropriate disciplinary action, to include suspension and expulsion.
